Want donations - check the Crowd Funding sites like www.kickstarter.com or www.sponsume.com for some examples.
Want investment - check investor/matchup sites like www.GoBigNetwork.com or www.mymicroinvest.com
IndieGoGo.com is an interesting alternative to KickStarter! It's less of an "exclusive club" (which can be a good thing if KickStarter doesn't want you) and unlike KickStarter, you get money even if you don't reach your goal.
Shameless plug: http://www.indiegogo.com/h2oscore-empower-100-cities-to-conserve-water?a=28939&i=addr (my startups campaign on IndieGoGo).
I checked the mymicroinvest website. On top of seedcapital (equity), entrepreneurs can get the supports from professionals. Startups use the power of the crowd to get visibility / credibility and reach invstors!
